What is Gum Contouring?

Gum contouring is a quick and often painless treatment. Used together with crowns and veneers, gum contouring is a simple procedure that can easily remedy a ‘gummy smile’.

Gum contouring is a cosmetic treatment that can boost your confidence as the quality of your smile is improved. Gums that are level and smooth, and that do not extend too far down the teeth create maximum aesthetic appeal. This appearance is now a possibility for everyone, through gum lifts that use laser technology to reshape the gum line.

What is the process?

Consultation

Your clinician will assess your gums and discuss the benefits of gum contouring with you.

Generally this will be undertaken as part of a smile makeover also involving other treatments.

Treatment

Local anaesthetic is administered to ensure no discomfort is felt during the gum contouring procedure. Excess gum tissue is cut away using a Diode Laser that cauterises as it cuts – effectively sealing up the wounds as the gums are cut away. This technique results in very little bleeding and a low risk of infection.

Repeated treatment is rarely required as gums only grow back in a very small number of cases.

If the gum does grow back, the dentist may need to remove a small amount of bone from the top of the teeth to prevent re-occurrence.

Aftercare and Recovery

Gum Contouring treatment should not cause you significant discomfort, however gums may be a little sore and/or swollen for a week or so after treatment. An over the counter painkiller such as Ibuprofen will help to ease any tenderness.

You should avoid spicy foods and those that contain seeds for a few days after treatment. The consumption of soft foods will minimise discomfort while eating, along with gently brushing and flossing teeth.
